The bamboo controversy continues because a lot of wholesalers and retailers are confused about bamboo rayon fabrics and bamboo fiber fabrics. If you read FTC's statement carefully, you will see that the two are two different fabrics. While bamboo fiber fabrics are indeed available (true they are more labor intensive and more expensive), most of bamboo fabrics on the market are bamboo rayon fabrics, should be called bamboo viscose, or Rayon made from bamboo which means they are processed from bamboo pulps, not bamboo fibers.
The claims on bamboo's natural anti UV and antimicrobial properties also may need more scientific backup or proof. Some sellers have over claimed advantages of these properties and have misled consumers, not that all of them did so intentionally.
Based on info we've collected over the past 3-4 years, we believe, more than ever, that both bamboo rayon and bamboo fiber made fabrics are sustainably produced. Bamboo is a truly sustainable crop as it grows fast, needs no pesticides or other chemical sprays, occupies little farming land and its usage almost endless . True, chemicals such as caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and CS2 are used in bamboo rayon processing. But so do any cellulose fiber productions or Tencel/Modal which are trade marked as eco products. Caustic soda is widely used in industries such as food processing, soap and paper making. In textile industry. it's necessary to use it for removing lignin, pentosan and pectin commonly found in plants. Its application is approved by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for sustainable fiber processing.
Many chemicals are toxic and could be potentially harmful to human health and environment. The crucial thing we are looking at is whether or not bamboo rayon is made with environmental concern and waste management practice. According to the reports provided by our bamboo supplier, bamboo viscose fiber is produced in a hermetic container, 100% Caustic soda were recycled, 73% CS2 were recycled and 26% were converted into H2SO4. The negative environmental impact is significantly reduced to a very minimum level.
Our bamboo rayon supplier has earned certificates of GB/T28001-2000 occupational safety and health management system, ISO9001:2000 quality management system, and IS14001:2004 Environment management system. In addition, the bamboo viscose fiber used in our fabrics has repeatedly passed the Oeko-test 100 class I standard which means it's suitable for baby products.
